In southern Idaho, the bulk of the state, the land is fairly flat like the midwest states. They have roads, highways, convenience stores, gas stations, and Burger Kings, just like anywhere else.
Northern Idaho is more mountainous, so other than using good quality snow tires, and having tire chains ready to put on in a moment's notice, there is not much difference from other places. In fact, northern Idaho's climate is fairly warm due to the weather almost always blowing in from the Pacific Ocean, about 400 miles to the west. But we still carry tire chains, plus we carry an extra warm quilt or two, and extra mittens and knit hats in the pickups. Or cars. There are more 4-wheel-drive vehicles here because of the snow (and mud from melting snow)
