Female Hippos attain sexual maturity at around 6 years of age. Males reach sexual maturity at around 7.5 years of age. However, males don't get to mate until they are much larger and older. Hippos have a gestation period of around 8 months after which a single hippo calf is born. Baby hippos are born under water and weigh around 25 to 45 kilograms in weight (60 to 110 pounds). They are around 125 cms (50 inches) in length at birth.

Hippopotamus are endangered due to the exploitation and habit loss (mainly due to heavy clearning of forest area). They are hunted illegally for meat.
each pregnancy results in between 1 and 3 baby hippos

Given their size, one might say hippos can't float because hippos seem too heavy to swim. One would be wrong. The hippo's fat makes it buoyant so it can float very well. On the other hand Hippos do not really swim. Their method of travel is very simple: they walk, or bound, if underwater.
Hippos are mammals I think.... so they must be born alive. Hope that helps?
