Basically yes. You can go hiking without going backpacking but you can't go backpacking without hiking. Give it a try its a load of fun. You need to learn some things first before going it alone. Like what to pack in your backpack for the trip and where you are going.
You can find suggestions on where to go backpacking around Europe online at the WikiHow website. Once on the page, type "How to Backpack Through Europe" into the search field at the top of the page and press enter to bring up the information.
"Backpacking" is traveling while living out of only a backpack, usually while staying in hostels. Europe is a great place to backpack, because the large volume of travelers means a good support system. If you are intending to backpack Europe, try purchasing a guide book designed for low-budget travelers, such as "Let's Go Europe" or Lonely Planet's "Europe on a Shoestring." Your local outfitter store should be able to provide the gear (such as a sturdy, large backpack) and advice you need to get yourself set to go.
Look for an internal-frame overnight or expedition pack at REI (www.rei.com) or MEC in Canada (www.mec.ca)... go for about 60 - 80 litres size... be sure it has sturdy, supportive waist and chest straps. Everything else is personal preference.

I have lost my backpack. We should go on a backpack trip.He stuffs the water bottle into his backpack.
As the only thing that came up when I googled this was a hard cased backpack, I'll have to answer based on that. The benefits to this are that if you were to drop it, you wouldn't damage the contents of it. The drawbacks to this design are that if you need to pass through areas, you'd need to take your backpack off as opposed to allowing it to snag. Realistically, you would want to go for comfort more than design, my current backpack is about 5-6 years of use down and still works like it did, were it a 'hybrid' backpack, I suspect it might've not lasted as long.
It depends what you are doing, you pack different items for different occasions.

It doesn't particularly matter what first aid supplies are carried in. It is recommended that a general first aid kid should be easy to grab and take somewhere. A backpack is an excellent option.
