Operationally during WW2 28,000 feet
I have personal knowledge of a QB-17 drone aircraft and director plane flying missions at Patrick AFB Florida at 41,000 to 42,000 feet. I was the Zman or radio aircraft repairman on these flights which were flown to support testing of the Boeing BOMARK Air Defense Missile

The WW II B 17 Flying fortress had 4 Prat and Whitney PW 1850 CID 7 cylender double row radial engies that produced 2,000 HP. each. They were able to take the B17 to the highert altitude of any bomber of its time in excess for 20,000 feet. About 12,00 were built by Boeing. 60 remain is flying condition today with several hundred on display in the US. and GB. They were in service from 1934 till 1948
