to heat a space. the ducts move from the evaporator(a/c) to the heater core, where the core has hot antifreeze going thru it and a blower motor blowing across it produces heat

If the car is setting in the sun.Heat builds up in the ducts. With my car, it was Heater matrix clogged with radiator sealant. The workshop cleaned it and it's start working fine!

Ductless air conditioners are not better than ones with ducts. The reason why ductless air conditioners are not better than ones with ducts is that they don't remove the hot air as well.
Will blowing hot air into a return air duct reduce the amount of gas used to heat?
Depends on where you get the hot air from. Returning hot air means the furnace will have to work less to heat that air back inåt output temperature. OTOH the energy to create that hot air has to come from somewhere. Using a space heater or something to blow into the return ducts will cost you more in electricity than what you save on the furnace .
The heater in my 2000 eclipse rs doesn't work both of the pipes going into the heater core are hot any suggestions on what could be wrong?
I assume the blower motor is going. There might be an air bubble preventing the warm water from circulation through the heater core, you might have a build-up of sludge doing the same. Or maybe there's something broken in the valves in the air ducts preventing the heater from releasing warm air into the car.

Sounds like your heater core has a leak and is causing steam to enter your air ducts. Does the steam have a coolant oder, if so, you will have to pull it and replace.

Most Furnaces have a temperature differential rating on the name plate on the inside of the unit. It's usually around 40-60 temp differential. This mean your supply air should be only 40-60 degrees warmer than your return air. If there is no tag on the unit or the differential is much higher or lower, call your local heating and air conditioning company. Electric heaters can be calculated differently with amps and volts. Call and electrician or heating and air conditioning company if you have an electric heater.
