Running a straight pipe will improve the engines performance, but at a cost. You will have a very loud car with not pollution controls for the exhaust. This may cause CO2 fumes to build in your car without you knowing it and cause you to pass out at the wheel.

How important is a catalytic converter in a standard car?

To keep the car running - not at all. To minimize the amount of polluting exhaust - very.

What is a catalytic convertor and how much do they cost?

A catalytic converter is important in breaking down the fumes that your vehicle creates so that they are safer for the environment. They can cost as little as $40.00 depending on your type of vehicle.

Will removing catalytic converter have negative effects on an engine?

As far as the environment is concerned, yes. Catalytic converters are very important in regulating the amount of pollution your vehicle emits. As far as vehicle performance, removing a catalytic converter could increase horsepower and exhaust flow. Removing the converter can (and does on most) cause the computer to over-correct for the improper oxygen sensor readings. This over-correction usually causes a reduction in power, economy, and running performance. It is also highly illegal.

Should a p0420 code show up in an MOT?

Yes, it shows that the catalytic converter is not working correctly for bank one. This is an important pollution control item.

Can a bad catalytic converter cause your 2001 Malibu to have intermittent power problems and check engine light indications?

A plugged catalytic converter will cause reduced power, lower gas mileage, and in extremely conditions, the engine will not run. The exhaust system is just as important as the intake. If the exhaust cannot get out, as when the catalytic coverter is plugged, the engine cannot create the proper amount of vacuum to draw the air fuel mixture into the cylinders. The exhaust gas is mixed with the incoming air mixture so you get a loss of power. This condition will also mess with the O2 sensor as the catalytic converter will get extremely hot and cannot reduce emissions properly because of reduced surface area contact. If you can remove the converter, and shine a light through it, you should be able to see the light on the other side fairly clearly. If not, you likely have a plugged converter. If you see any type of melting of the converter material, the honeycomb structure inside the metal housing, change it. You may also need to look for engine problems that could cause the melting of the converter.

What happens if you Remove the catalytic converter?

Before you read any further, I must tell you that removing the catalytic converter is illegal. I strongly advise that you DO NOT remove it. You will be in violation of Federal and most state laws. That being said, the biggest negative effect, as stated, is that is illegal. You will never pass emissions. But if you don't have emissions tests, removing the catalytic converter will increase flow of exhaust from your engine, allowing the engine to run more efficiently. This means more power, and since the weight doesn't change, better fuel economy (usually). But before you go chopping off your catalytic converter, it is important to know that on modern cars, there is an oxygen sensor after the converter to monitor it's performance. removing the converter will turn on the 'check engine' light. Also, depending on your vehicle, the o2 sensor may also affect your fuel/air mixture, and may hurt both fuel economy and power. One last thing to consider: There IS such a thing as too little restrictions on exhaust. Some engines need some back pressure to run efficiently. Removing the catalytic converter and the muffler, and increasing the diameter of the pipes too much will decrease the velocity with which the exhaust gases move, which will actually cause more restrictions on the engine.

What are symptoms of faulty catalytic converter 1989 ranger STX?

If the converter is plugged, contaminated, damaged or rusted out, it must be replaced. Likewise, if the OBD II system is showing low catalyst efficiency, the converter must be replaced. Driveability symptoms such as a drop in fuel economy, lack of high speed power, rough idle or stalling are classic symptoms of excessive backpressure due to a plugged converter. Checking exhaust backpressure and/or intake vacuum will tell you if there's a blockage. The important point to remember is that converters don't just plug up or die for no good reason. There is usually an underlying cause which must also be diagnosed and corrected before the problem can be eliminated. Diagnosing a plugged or fouled catalytic converter is only half the fix. Replacing a bad catalytic converter will only temporarily restore things to normal because unless the underlying problem that caused the original converter to fail is identified and fixed, the replacement converter will likely suffer the same fate. Always replace the O2 sensor if the converter needs replacing. That may not be all that needs to be done. A defective spark plug or wires, or a burnt exhaust valve will also destroy the converter.
