Little Round Top was a hill occupied by a sizable Union force. An ill fated serious of Confederate assaults on this hill caused an unacceptable number of Rebel casualties. The charge was led by Confederate General George Pickett. It became one of the defining moments within the three day battle at Gettysburg. The assaults were unfounded and contrary to Lee's plans to win at Gettysburg.

Little Round Top presented a natural raised gun platform overlooking the length of the Federal positions on Cemetery Ridge. If the Confederates had been able to get artillery on the hill, the entire Yankee line could have been taken under fire and their position rendered untenable. Brigadier General Gouverneur K. Warren, Chief Engineer of the Army of the Potomac recognized this and was able to send troops to Little Round Top. The first to arrive was a brigade under Colonel Strong Vincent who placed the 20th Maine Volunteer Infantry regiment on the left of his line. It was just in time, as Evander Law's brigade of Alabamians and Texans were already beginning to climb to the summit.

At Little Round Top, the Union Army under Colonel Lawrence Chamberlain from Maine, prevented the Confederate Army from out flanking and attacking the Union Army, on it's right side, and gaining the high ground at Gettysburg, PA. It was a very important battle, and the last ditch bayonet charge, led by Col. Chamberlain (when the Union soldiers had almost no ammunition left), defeated the Rebels, and cost the Confederates many men, and helped the Union Army to win the Battle of Gettysburg. Col. Chamberlain later received the Medal of Honor for winning the Battle of Little Round Top, and eventually became a General.

Little Round Top was the extreme left of the Union line. If Little Round Top fell, then the entire Union line would fail. On day 2 of the battle, General Lee's plan was to flank the Union. He sends General Longstreet's Corp to take The left flank and Little Round Top. Once captured, they would set up artillery on the top and fire strait down on the Union line. This would force them to break ranks and retreat. If the Union retreated, then the Army of Northern Virginia would have their free pick of Philadelphia, DC, or Harrisburg, and would probably have won the war.

It was a vital position on the extreme left of the Union Line.

The second day of the battle, still unoccupied, it was about of being seized by the advancing Confederates, which in that case would have dominated the Union units deployed on the Cemetery Ridge with incalculable consequences for the outcome of the battle.

But thanks to the initiative of Gen. G.K. Warren, commander of the Engineer Corps of the Army of the Potomac, it was at the right moment manned by a battery and two infantry brigades of the Union Second Corps, who managed to repeal the Confederate assaults,

sorting out the situation and saving the day.

Because if the Confederates won little round top, they could have slowly moved up the union line and could have completely destroyed it thus winning Gettysburg.
