It may only need a coolant temp sensor to be fixed not a new gauge.
That was the case on my 98 v6 - the sensor tip basically fell off - or I helped it fall off while doing the water pump.
NOTE: You will need to know what type of connector the sensor has: the old-fashioned type that looks like a screw versus the alternative, referred to as a 'two blade' connector - a plastic wire connector cap.
Funny thing is that there is still only 1 wire going to the sensor.
It may be the cooling temperature sender not cooling temperature sensor, I had the same problem. I replaced the sensor but that didn't fix problem, I replaced the sending unit and that fixed the problem.
No, but it has a temperature gauge that you need to check regularly.
Thermostat probably needs to be replaced.
The Temperature sensor for the computer is on top the head. The temperature sensor for the temperature gauge is located under the Thermostat housing.

On a 1997 Ford Contour : ( No ) Just the engine oil pressure warning light located in the upper right area of your gauge cluster ( above the fuel gauge )
Check coolant temperature with a thermometer- could be a bad gauge reading or a defective fan sensor

Defective temperature gauge or defective temperature sensor?
Why does your temperature gauge rise and lower only when you have the heat on?
