According to most American English dictionaries, a narwhal [Monodon monoceros] is related to whales, porpoises, and dolphins. It's a mammal, and therefore gives birth to live young. It's a marine animal, and therefore lives in the sea. Specifically, its habitats are the northern Atlantic waters around Canada and Greenland, and the Arctic waters off the Canadian, Greenland and Russian coasts. The narwhal averages a body length of 16 feet. It has a curved, frontward projecting, long tooth that adds another 7-9 feet to its total length. Its tusk is an excellent source of ivory. The Inuit peoples of Canada and Greenland hunt the narwhal as food; for its tusk as the source of income and of tools; for the oil that can be obtained from narwhal blubber; and for the leather that can be made from its gray spotted skin.

How do humans affect narwhal habitats?

The narwhal habitat is found in the Arctic waters off Canada; Greenland, Iceland, the polar islands off Scotland; and Russia. That habitat is affected by human-caused and natural climate change; and by human activities such as hunting and maritime transportation. The narwhal live in a narrowly defined geographic region, and depend on a specialized diet. Changes in air and water quality therefore affect the lifetyles of the narwhal and of their prey.
