In the past, the only way to determine if someone had Alper's disease was to do an autopsy after death. Due to medical advances, specifically the discovery of POLG mutations that cause Alper's, diagnosis can now be made with a blood test and confirmed with blood tests from both parents. It can also be diagnosed during prenatal testing AND invetro using PGD.
