B. pertussis is a small, aerobic gram-negative bactrerial shaped rod. It spread just like the common cold by inhaling the "mist" put out by the cough or the bacteria found on hands and surfaces.
The bacteria attach to the cilia of the respiratory epithelial cells, produce toxins that paralyze the cilia, and cause inflammation of the respiratory tract. This causes the
severe coughing spells and raspy breathing that makes a “whooping†sound.
