Caesar is known mostly as a dictator that rejected the rupublican form of government that was in place at the time. However without Caesar doing this, it is likely that the republic would have collapsed soon anyway, destroying Rome with it. Also, he changed and created various laws without consulting the other consul selected at the time. He created the calendar which we know today (that includes a leap year every four years). He also originated the idea of using 'Caesar' as a name for a ruler, rather than for a person. 'Csar', 'Tsar' and 'Kaiser' are all alternate forms of Caesar.
