Gathering and processing DNA evidence and gathering and processing latent fingerprints are two entirely separate disciplines. They may both be done by forensic technicians, but there is no similarity between the two.
The term "fingerprinting" in relation to DNA nothing to do with the literal sense of fingerprints, which unique impressions of your fingers. That being said, a DNA profile is as unique person as their fingerprints. So DNA fingerprinting is the publishing of the person's profile based on DNA information. This is done by extracting that person's DNA and comparing it on a database of the DNA of those who are required by law to submit their DNA. It should be noted that if a person voluntarily submits their DNA sample for comparison to DNA at a crime scene and the DNA information do not match, the volunteer donor's DNA may not be added to CODIS.
