An alkane feed is contacted at sub-atmospheric pressure and at an elevated temperature with a preheated charge of Chromic Oxide-alumina catalyst in a fixed bed reactor. Carbon is deposited on the catalyst as the reaction proceeds. In order to provide the necessary heat of reaction it is usual after a short while to switch the alkane feed to another reactor whilst the catalyst of the first mentioned reactor is regenerated by burning off the deposited carbon with hot air.

Formation of formaldehyde from methyl alcohol?

In the body this reaction is carried out by the enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase, the same enzyme that reduces ethyl alcohol to acetaldehyde: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcohol_dehydrogenase This is main mechanism of methanol toxicity due to the tissue damage casued by the resulting formaldehyde. On the bench you can perform a variety of dehydrogenation reactions, usually catalysed by metal salts such as copper chromite. The industrial method involves passing methanol vapour over copper heated to 300C.

Does ethane conduct electricity?

Pure ethanol, like pure water, is a poor conductor of electricity. This is because there are nearly no electrolytes in the substance, besides the negligible number that form as a result of auto-ionization. Therefore, the charge cannot be carried through the ethanol. However, impurities may substantially increase the conductivity of an ethanol solution.
