It is sustainable insofar as it is natural, the pertinent question is does it provide a sustainable income?

The amount of food a crop requires to provide it's own replacement is minimal. A farmer requires more than minimal returns so requires to supplement the crops diet to produce extra for a crop.

Inorganic methods provide bumper short term returns with some side effects, but, organic will provide a smaller crop therefore requiring higher prices.
