Audible sound may be splitted up into many overlaid frequency components, from low frequency to high frequency, from bass to treble. Via some mathematical tricks, the well known waveform of sound, like it comes to the ear and like its more or less directly contained e.g. in CDs, LPS or PCM wave files, can be transformed into a frequency domain which may be imagined like an equalizer which shows the frequency-components of a signal.
Indeed, the human auditory System works basically like this. Not mathematically, but the inner ear decomposes sound to obtain the frequency components, its really amazing.
Blocks of MP3 data, which cover a time slot of e.g. 20 milliseconds for every block, carry the information of every Frequency component, contained in this 20 milliseconds of sound.
The MP3 player composes this information with the inverse formulas of the tricks which were used to decompose the sound. The result is a standard waveform like it may be processed via a soundcard and transmitted to loudspeakers or headphones.
