A theory has been proven. A hypothesis simply an educated guess not yet tested. Also because a hypothesis is just a guess, but a theory can be proved and was proven at one point in time.

A theory can be a guess or an idea supported by facts. A hypothesis is an educated guess that is waiting to be tweeked or proven.
