Well the only way the two are similar is that they both mechanically power or drive something. They both generate power and energy. But one runs off electricity usually magnetic energy. An internal combustion engine runs off a fuel such as gasoline or diesel fuel and emits gases i.e Carbon Monoxide harmful to you and your kids, an electric motor ,"by the way anything that runs off electicity is call a motor not an engine", does not emit any pollutants.
