The kit fox lives in prairies, grasslands, woodland, and meadows. In the prairie, the kit fox prefers or likes dry, brushy areas.

Some things that are ruining its habitat are wind turbines, extraction equipment, and oil exploration.

The kit fox has large ears, a slim body, slender legs, a narrow nose, and a bushy tail. The colors of the kit fox are tan and yellowish gray (those are the common colors). In the summer the color of the coat is tan, and in the winter the coat is silver gray.

The kit foxes colors allow it to blend in at night because all of the things in the prairie are nearly the same color as the color of the kit fox's coat. This is how they camouflage themselves in the prairie, and is how it protects itself from other animals in the prairie.

The size of a full grown male kit fox is 80.5 cm. A full grown female kit fox is 76.9 cm. The weight of the males are about 2.3 kg (5.0 lbs), and the female kit fox is 2.1 kg (4.6 lbs). The baby kit foxes are about 45.5 cm inches in size when they are born and weigh around 1-2 lbs.

The kit fox is nocturnal, which means it is active at night. When it is dark out the kit fox goes and hunts for food. When the mother is taking care of her young the father goes and gets the food for the family. They eat snakes, lizards, prairie squirrels, and insects.

The kit fox will go and make a new home two times every month so that other animals will not find them, their pups can be protected, and also to find more food.

Mating season takes place between late December and March. Litters are born between February and late March. When the pups are born, the mother has two to six pups at a time. The male kit fox provides most of the food for the pups before they are born. The pups are born with no hair and start to grow hair after a couple of days. After four to five months between August and September, the young pups start to disappear and go hunt for themselves. They need to practice hunting for themselves because they can not depend on their mother and father to get their food for them.

Most of the kit foxes in the prairie live a long time, possibly as long as ten years.
