Where the amplitude of an output signal can be calculated at an INSTANT in time. This is fine for AM radio and FDM systems and imaginable for FM radio. Often a voice frequency band input modulated a carrier envelope or similar side-to-side modulation in FM radio, more immune to amplitude hits.
Otherwise it's a string of 1s and 0s which at any time could be 1/2 way through delivering the bytes of the value of a voice sample. In doing this they will be at one of two voltages only, zero or 5 volts for example.
