The Earth is divided into sections of Earth called tectonic plates. These plates float on the mantle layer of the Earth which is mostly magma. When the plates shift sometimes the rug against each other or go on top or under each other. This caused faults or weak parts which can cause an Earth Quake.

An oceanic earthquake works almost similar to any earthquake on land. In an underwater earthquake, the seafloor moves, causing vibrations in the ground and shockwaves. How do they use seismometers to locate the origin of the earthquake?

You can think of this in the same way that satellites work to find your location for the GPS in your car. An earthquake happens and it is picked up on 3+ seismometers. These seismometers measure the waves that the earthquake produced and the velocity at which they are traveling and you look at where all the seismometer calculations run together. You have the epicenter of your earthquake.
