Depends on the type of mine. For surface mining, we use a track drill. This is a mobile piece of equipment, mounted on tracks. A "top hole" drill uses drill steel (hardened steel rods) that are hammered into the rock, and rotate, crushing rock to powder, which is blown out by water or compressed air. Some drills use rotating bits that grind their way through the rock. Underground mining may use a "Jumbo", which has several drill bits mounted on one machine, or a "jack leg" drill- a hydraulic jack braces the drill against to roof and floor, and hammers a bit into the rock. In a few special mines, a thermal lance is used to burn holes into the rock. PS- good drilling= good blasting= good mining.

To drill oil do you have to cut down trees?

Some oil drilling is done on rigs at sea, where there are no trees. Some oil drilling is done in countries that are primarily deserts.

What is difference between reaming and drilling?

Drilling is a cutting process in which drill is used to make a hole. Drilling process usually creates rough surfaces. Therefore, reaming is done after drilling to make a good surface finish, without changing the chemical and physical properties of the material. In reaming, only 5% of the material is removed (rest is removed by drilling process done before).

What do miners in diamond mines do?

The primary work of the diamond miner in most of the underground mines involves drilling holes to set charges, doing the blasting to loosen material, gathering up the material and then getting it into the hoppers to get it to the surface for processing.

When you're done drilling for oil in a certain place what is done with the drilling rig Do they leave it there?

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. I have seen abandoned oil equipment sitting out in fields. Oil companies also cap the wells and remove the equipment. After being in the drilling fields for 30 years, (resume, http://www.drilshop.com/elliott/resume.html) I have never seen drilling rigs left behind. Question would you leave $50,000,000 or more behind. There could be some evidence of the work may get left behind, but not the rig and support equipment. Economics: Gulfof Mexico
