Oil is a combination of numerous hydrocarbons each with a unique boiling point. Each fractional hydrocarbon may therefore be evaporated (by boiling) and condensed (by cooling) resulting in a purer hydrocarbon i.e. gasoline.

Fractional distillation is the process of separating the constituents of crude oil into purer forms by the use of their different boiling/condensing points. Its use is important because it is the easiest and simplest method of separating them; since petrol engines can only use certain types of fuel efficiently, being able to put the right mix into the fueltank is extremely useful.

Which is used to separate the components of petroleum?

Fractional distillation is used to separate crude oil into many components.

In what situation would you use fractional distillation over simple distillation?

You would use simple distillation when the two products you are trying to separate have large difference in boiling points. Fractional distillation is needed when the two products have very close boiling points (like Hexane and toluene). In petroleum refining, the word "fractionation", not "fractional distillation" is used, often interchangeably with "distillation". When we have a crude mixture of different compounds which have very minor difference in their boiling points and cannot be separated simple distillation, then fractional distillation is used. Differenciation of components of petroleum is done by this process

Most of the components of petroleum are separated by Fractional distillation.

Why is fractional distillation of petroleum a backwards distillation?

cause it goes upand down. thats how it works
