Influenza is carried by a virus. It is transferred in the air, via sneezes and coughs by people who are infected, and on surfaces such as doorknobs, banisters, railings and handles where the virus may survive for two or three days after contact by the contaminated hands of a person who is infected. When you touch such a surface with your hand, you may pick up the virus and transfer it to your eye, nose or mouth.
