This happens when a molecule is symmetrical. A good example of how this works is in carbon dioxide (CO2).

The bonds between carbon and oxygen are polar, but the oxygen atoms are on exact opposite sides of the carbon atom. So you have two polar bonds that are equal in strength but opposite in direction and so they cancel each other out.

This effect can occur in molecules with these geometries: linear, trigonal planar, tetrahedral, trigonal bipyramidal, and octahedral.
