A kidney stone can damage the kidney mainly by blocking the normal flow of urine and irritating the urinary tract. When a stone gets stuck in the kidney or ureter, urine backs up and increases pressure inside the kidney. This pressure can stretch and damage delicate kidney tissues, reducing how well the kidney filters blood. Over time, prolonged blockage can lead to hydronephrosis (swelling of the kidney) and even permanent kidney damage. Kidney stones can also scrape and irritate the lining of the kidney and urinary tract as they move, causing inflammation, bleeding, and pain. If bacteria are present, the blockage can trap urine and lead to infection, which further damages kidney tissue. In short, kidney stones harm the kidney by causing obstruction, increasing pressure, triggering inflammation, and sometimes leading to infection, all of which can impair kidney function if not treated.
It is a progressive kidney disease caused by damage to the capillaries in the kidneys glomeruli.
There are several different types of kidney disease. These include inflammation of the filtering parts of the kidney (called glomerulonephritis), polycystic kidney disease, an inherited genetic disorder where the kidney tissues become replaced by cysts, and scarring of the kidney tissues caused by backflow of the urine from the bladder (called reflux nephropathy), which is caused by structural defects. Diabetic kidney disease which damages the kidneys' filtering membranes, and kidney disease due to high blood pressure are other forms of kidney disease
Nephrohydrosis (synonym Hydronephrosis) Term popular in <nephrology> Abnormal enlargement of a kidney, may occur secondary to acute ureteral obstruction (kidney stone) or in chronic kidney disease.
A baby does not need to be born with polycystic kidney disease. PKD is caused by a genetic defect.
Nephros, Greek for "kidney," is the root word used in a shortened form as the medical prefix for words relating to the kidney. For example:* Nephrology = the branch of medicine dealing with the kidney * Nephrologist = kidney doctor * Nephrolithiasis = kidney stone disease
Urinating blood is usually caused by a serious kidney stone - although it is true that other kidney injuries, such as a punch to a kidney, can cause this symptom.
nephrectasisthe distention of a kidneyDistension of the pelvises of the kidney is known as hydronephrosis and is caused by the obstruction of the outflow of urine from the kidneys. Enlargement of the kidney itself may be due to polycystic kidney disease, renal cell carcinoma, infiltration of the kidneys with metastases or Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome.
