How is oil pollution controlled?

First off the pollutants contained in il refinery waste water include oils and grease (generally referred to as ether soluble material), solids, inorganic salts, organics (phenol, benzene, aromatics, etc.) and temperature.

These materials are removed in the following manner:

• Oils and Greases: The water is allowed to settle in large tanks. The oils and greases rise and are skimmed off the top of the water.
• Solids: The water is allowed to settle in large tanks. The solids sink and are collected at the bottom by scrapers
• Organic materials: These components are responsible for taste and odor problems, fish toxicity and similar problems. They are removed by activated sludge systems which allow bacteria to eat up the contaminants. The bacteria are then removed for disposal leaving clean water behind.
• Inorganic salts: Some of these which contain nitrogen are removed by the activated sludge, others can be removed by activated carbon or eliminated by in-plant controls which stop their discharge.
• Temperature: The heat is removed from the water with heat exchangers before the effluents leave the refinery operating units
