You take your tree trimmings and cut them into small piece. You take your lawn trimmings, and add them to the pile. You add other trimmings to the pile. You add water. Once every few weeks you take a shovel and dig up the pile putting what was on the bottom on the top. You can add coffee grounds and cut up banana peel and some other kitchen waste. Do not add seeds. If it starts smoking, add water. In several months, you will have compost.
Make a pile of a mix of grass clippings, weeds, and leaves. Moisten the pile. Every 4 days, use a spading fork to turn the pile. Keep moist, but not wet. If the pile is 2-3 feet deep, within a few days you will feel heat as you turn the pile- that is the bacteria that are breaking down (composting) the plant material. You can add a small amount of limestone, any green vegetation, and not more than 50% leaves. You can add potato peelings, vegetable scraps from the table, etc. Do not put meat or grease into your compost pile- manure is OK but not required.
