The big difference between standard motor oil and primary/trans fluid is the lack of sulfur in the motor oil and the viscosity, the sulfur helps adsorb shock and is much better for the trans. A far as the primary goes the thinner oil is much better for your clutch, ATF is also a good primary fluid, many companies like Barnette recommend it.

The Sportster primary needs special oil called primary fluid sold at all Harley dealers and independent shops. Full motorcycle synthetic motor oil can also be used but many debate this because it is too slippery on the gears. I never had any problems with this. Primary's get very hot so a good fluid is essential.

Motor oil is not for zippos. You can buy motor oul at any age with no problems. Zippo fluid is different, you can buy it at any age, but store's won't sell it to you usually

Not a good idea. Viscosity and thermal properties will be different. They might also react differently with rubber seals, causing them to swell or shrink, which could cause a leak. Best to use the correct hydraulic fluid, or motor oil that was originally intended for the job.
