When a nuclear bomb, or hydrogen bomb for the matter, is dropped there are several parts to be aware of. First is the initial area where the bomb drops, this whole area will be very irradiated. Second, the whole area will succumb to intense heat, as well as intense radiation. This radiation could last for a VERY long time. (Chernobyl is still irradiated). Now after the initial large debris comes down, there will still be copious amounts of irradiated dust, dirt, particles etc in the air that will be carried, and will slowly reach the ground. This is known as fallout.
