The Romantic movement began with Lyrical Ballads, the collection in which this poem was initially published. The Romantics changed many aspects of poetry, here the depiction of an old man is in itself Romantic. Previously, poetry was written about the higher classes, for the higher classes. Though this poem was still circulated throughout the higher classes, for the first time, lower class citizens such as this old man were being used as muses for poetry.

In the short story "Old Man Travelling" by William Wordsworth, romanticism is shown through the protagonist's connection with nature and his solitary wanderings. His appreciation for the beauty of the natural world and his introspective thoughts while journeying reflect the romantic ideals of individualism, emotion, and communion with nature. The old man's sense of wonder and awe at the landscape around him also embody the themes of beauty and transcendence characteristic of romantic literature.
