There are five categories as defined late 2009 by the Scottish Whisky Association- 1)Single Malt 2)Blended Malt 3)Single grain 4)Blended grain 5)Blended whiskey Single malt is made from only malted barley, yeast and water and is distilled in copper pot stills, aged a minimum of 3 years. It can only come from 1 distillery in Scotland. Blended malt (or vatted malt) - is made in the same way as single malt but it can be blended together using single malt whiskey from any distillery in Scotland. Single grain whiskey - is made from wheat instead of barley and is distilled at higher volume in modern stainless steel column stills. It must be aged for a minumum 3 years in oak barrels and can only come from 1 grain distillery. Blended grain whiskey - is made in the same way as single grain but can be blended using grain whiskey from any grain distillery. Blended whiskey - can contain whiskey from any single malt and any grain distillery in Scotland. The two worth knowing about are numbers 1 and 5! NB - Blended whiskey (Grant's, Johnnie Walker, Famous Grous etc) makes up around 85% of the total volume of Scotch whiskey sold around the world.

What is the difference between how single malt and blended whiskeys are made?
I believe the "pure malt" referred to is actually a "single single" malt. Single malt is when whiskey comes from a single malting, or batch of malted barley. This just means that the same batch of malted barley was used to make all the whiskey in that particular bottle you are drinking. It can come from many different actual batches/vats of whiskey as long as the same malt is used. Single single is when all the whiskey came from the same batch of whiskey, not just the same batch of malted grain. However, sometimes even single single malt whiskey is not pure. It is sometimes watered down to obtain the desired proof, or alcoholic content. The purest form of whiskey is barrel strength single single malt. This means it is a single single malt that has not been watered down. This may actually be the "pure malt" that you heard about. For anybody wondering about double malt, it is simply whiskey made using whiskey made from two separate malts. When any more than two malts are used, it is generally referred to simply as "malt whiskey" or "blended malt" whiskey. The reason superb single malts are so expensive is the fact that if the malt is sub-par, then it cannot be used and a new malt must be done. On the opposite end of the spectrum, this is also why some single malts are so cheap. They aren't after that 'perfect' whiskey. They're just making whiskey as cheap as possible... kinda like the McDonald's of whiskey. This also applies to blended malt whiskeys. Some are truly superb because of the extensive blending that goes into making them exactly how the blendmaster wants them. Double or blended malts make up most of your mid-price whiskey due to the ease of mixing multiple malts to come up with a mediocre product... not the smoothest on the market, but far from the bottom of the barrel, so to speak.

Difference between singal whisky and scotch whisky?
Scotch whiskey is any whiskey (regardless of grain type etc.) that is made in Scotland and produced according to the Scotch Whisky Regulations. Single whiskey is whiskey that is produced anywhere in the world (unless it's Single Scotch Whisky, Single Irish Whisky etc.) and that comes from exactly one distillery. The distillery may bottle a single barrel or may mix together many different casks - as long as these all come from that one distillery, it's still "single".

Bourbon is whiskey made in Kentucky, specifically Bourbon County: Maker's Mark Scotch is blended whiskey made in Scotland: Johnny Walker Irish whiskey is made in Ireland. It can be Single Malt (Glendfiddich), double malt or more. American whiskey is that which is not made in Bourbon County: Jack Daniels. Canadian whiskey is that which is made in Canada: Seagrams, Candian Club.
