Yes apparently
a sunshine recorder is used to record the duration of sunshine at a place for a day
A Campbell-Stokes sunshine recorder is commonly used for this purpose. Nowadays replaced by electronic equipments that do the same task automatically, and with repeatable results.

Well, they used to make a light meter that was used by photographers back in the day to take a meter reading so they could adjust the settings on the camera. Most of the ones I saw and owned back in the day did not use batteries. They were handheld and had a window usually made of plastic and a meter. Now-a-days everything is computed for you with the use of computer chips that do all the legwork. You can still buy cameras that you can set the aperture, speed, etc. and bypass the chips so that you have more control over your picture. The problem today is that we rely on electronics so much that one instance of electromagnetic shock could well knock us into the dark ages in a matter of hours. It's good to know the old ways because one day you may find yourself wishing you knew how to keep food cold without a fridge or light a fire with flint and steel......
