In the original 1900 book edition of 'The Wizard of Oz', the Cowardly Lion is described specifically in terms of his noise making and his size. For example, he's presented as a great lion. The five friends need to cross a river in a raft. The Lion adds a big, heavy weight to the raft which nevertheless manages not to sink. In the poppy fields, he's described as too big to be lifted by his companions. So he ends up having to be pulled out by an entire army of field mice.

The Cowardly Lion not only intimidates with his size but also with his voice. In fact, he has a very loud, terrifyingroar. But his noise is far worse than his feeble, frightened attempts at biting, hitting, and scratching. He puts on a scary front, but quickly backs down into meekness.
