The Empire State Building was the first building with 100 stories, reaching 1,472 ft or 448.7 m. It held the tallest building record from 1931 up to 1967 when the Ostankino Tower in Moscow, Russia took over the title. The Burj Dubai in Dubai, United Arab Emirates is currently the tallest free standing building in the world.
The record for running up the Empire State Building is held by the Australian runner Paul Crake, who completed the ascent in 9 minutes and 33 seconds during the annual Empire State Building Run-Up event in 2003. This iconic race involves climbing 1,576 steps to the 86th floor observatory. The event has seen numerous competitors, but Crake's record time remains unbeaten.
When the Empire State Building was completed in 1931, it stood at 1,454 feet (including its antenna), making it the tallest building in the world at that time. It surpassed the previous record-holder, the Chrysler Building, which was 1,046 feet tall. The Empire State Building held the title of the world's tallest building for nearly 40 years until the completion of the World Trade Center's North Tower in 1975. Its iconic height and Art Deco design made it a symbol of New York City and an architectural marvel of its era.
