It's a virus, so it enters your blood cells through bodily fluids excluding urine and saliva. The infected blood cells then duplicate causing the virus to duplicate as well. Our immune system weakens by trying to kill the virus.

An HIV virus is eaten and digested by a T4 cell in the human blood stream. That is what T4 cells are supposed to do. They are supposed to eat up viruses circulating in the blood stream. However, parts are left over that normally are not. A strand of RNA finds a template starts transcribing instructions for creating a new virus. It keeps transcribing until the cell runs out of food after producing some 200 viruses.

Thus the information in an old virus takes over a cells machinery and has the cell produce new viruses.
