The energy released by an earthquake is measured using a seismometer. The amplitude of the seismic waves recorded by a seismometer are in-turn plugged into an equation that gives a value on the magnitude scale.

An instrument called seismometer measures the magnitude of seismic waves...!! However, to determine the total energy released by an earthquake requires combining the signals from multiple seismometers at different locations around the epicenter of the earthquake. This is because you have to know the location of the earthquake relative to the seismometer and this requires trianulation. You also have to have information about the local geology at the epicenter, since the type of rock and the local faults are clearly involved.

Explain the difference between magnitude and intensity of an earthquakes?

The magnitude of an earthquake is the amount of energy released at the source of the earthquake and is measured by a seismograph. Intensity is shaking strength of an earthquake at a particular location.

What is measured by the amount of energy released by an earthquake?

Magnitude scales are measurements of the amount of energy released by an earthquake. Perhaps the most famous is the Richter magnitude scale although this has since been replaced by the moment magnitude scale. Please see the related questions for more information.

Is a hurricane stronger than an earthquake?

In terms of the maximum amount of energy released, an earthquake is stronger.

Why is magnitude a better measure of strength of earthquakes than intensity?

The difference is that intensity is the extent of damage released by an earthquake and is measured differently at different places depending on its distance from the epicenter while the magnitude is the amount of energy released by an earthquake and it has a fixed energy as it is released by an earthquake.

What measures released energy of an earthquake?

The energy released by an earthquake is measured using a seismometer. The amplitude of the seismic waves recorded by a seismometer are in-turn plugged into an equation that gives a value on the magnitude scale.
