Mt. Vesuvius and Mt. St. Helens actually have many similarities. They are essentially the same type of volcano, although there is a slight difference in classification. The major difference between the two is that Vesuvius is considered a Soma volcano as it is built within the major collapse caldera of an ancient larger mountain than Vesuvius. Otherwise these volcanoes have similar explosive eruptive histories, and have very similar chemical make ups within their magma chamber.

The area around Vesuvius (near Naples, Italy) is still highly populated, while the area around Mount St. Helens (formerly a mountainous forest) has even fewer people than before the 1980 eruption. Most of the area is now a National Preserve.

Mount Vesuvius first erupted in historical time on August 24, 79 AD, and continues to erupt less violently, most recently in 1944. Mount St. Helens has had several spectacular eruptions in recorded history, first in 1480-82, then 1800 and 1842-47, prior to the cataclysmic one in 1980.

Both the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens and the 79 AD eruption of Mount Vesuvius were highly explosive Plinian eruptions, the most violent type. Such eruptions produce tall ash clouds and large pyroclastic flows.
