Throughout the book, we discover that the giver's problems are many: From his daughter's "release" (suicide), to the powerless of sameness, to the fact that he shoulders the most painful memories known to mankind.
However, in his mind, we see that Jonas has taken place of Rosaline. Soon, he will force the entire community to share the pain and joy of the memories he once held for himself. And, best of all, with everything back the way it used to be, people will be unique once again.
In "The Giver," the community solves the problem of having to deal with painful memories and emotions by appointing a Receiver of Memory to bear the burden of remembering. This allows the rest of the community to live in a controlled environment without the turmoil of emotions and memories.
"The Giver" is a novel by Lois Lowry. In the story, the Giver does not have a wife.
