a builder is "un constructeur" in French, when speaking of the head of the company which builds your house. The employees would be called only by the name of their trade (eg maçon for mason, charpentier for carpenter, ...)
Code 229 of the Code of Hammurabi states that if a carpenter builds a house and it collapses, resulting in the death of the house's owner, the carpenter will be put to death.
