"Nebula" means "cloud" [cf. "nebulous," meaning misty or uncertain]. At one time, it was though that those fuzzy lights in the night sky were patches of glowing gas, probably satellites of our Galaxy. Better ranging techniques eventually confirmed that those were other galaxies, so far away they we couldn't discern the individual stars.

Pre-Hubble, it would have been quite acceptable to speak of the "Andromeda Nebula." Now, only something we KNOW is a gas cloud can be called a nebula, the most common usage being for "planetary nebulae" which, to add further confusion to the uninitiated, aren't composed of planets.

What is is hubbles law?

Hubble's Law states that (more or less) the distance to a galaxy is a constant multiple of the distance to that galaxy. For example, if one galaxy is moving away from us at three times the speed of another galaxy, then that means it is also three times as far away. The Law indicates that the Universe is expanding and had a beginning. Before Hubble's Law, many astronomers thought that the Universe did not have a beginning (it always existed).

What are important discoveries in science for this society?

The ones that lead to new engineering developments and then lead to new technologies and products. However there is no way to predict which discoveries may or may not eventually become "important" before doing the initial research and then seeing if engineers are able to develop something from those discoveries and what until possibly many decades later. Also the initial research may make no discoveries at all in the first place.
