The medulla is a structure at the base of the brain stem; the closer toward the spinal cord a brain structure is, the earlier in our evolution it appeared, since it would have been more vital to survival. As such, the medulla controls breathing and heart rate, which obviously every organism (with a brain) needs to survive.
