There are many differences. One is that old Imperialism mostly used trade ports to trade merchandise with other countries- they also did it respectfully. New Imperialism wanted domination. Instead of trading peacefully, they decided to just take over the countries. New Imperialism was all about getting more money. I hope this helped!
It was different by economics, politics, and the motives they had. Economics: In the "old imperialism" it was about trade. They had an importance with buying off the natives that brought them the goods. They had trading spots along the coast of South Africa and islands by Asia and England. The "new imperialism" is all about money. They went into coutries and set up plantations, docks, and factories. They didn't want just trade.
'Old Imperialism' usually consisted of battle and conquest of land and forming of colonies. These imperialists mainly wanted to gain political prestige, and gain from their conquests economically. There is the old saying "Gold, Glory and God" (and in old imperialism, it was almost always in that order)
In 'New Imperialism', however, imperialist countries would involve economic means of establishing colonies and gaining power in them. They would hope to "civilize" the natives of the land, and educate them in their ways. Rudyard Kipling is an example of a writer who details in a poem titled "The White Man's Burden" that it is the duty of the white Europeans to "civilize" the "uncivilized" humans of other races. This, however, remains controversial over whether he was being critical of the idea itself (writing sarcastically) or whether he was serious.

New Trade Routes
America needed new markets for its goods, not a source of raw material for industries
to look for new land and to find new material.
Some people would say there is no "new imperialism"-- that what we see in many cases is just the same old imperialism in a new form, aided by globalization and corporate money. It should also be noted that the term "imperialism" is a very contested and controversial term. Not everyone believes that economic expansion by richer nations is in fact imperialism. That said, there are many human rights groups which feel that the wealthier western nations are in fact guilty of a modern-day version of imperialism, by exploiting poorer nations (mostly in the third world), plundering their resources to make such goods as cellphones or computers. So there may not be one catchy word or phrase to describe this, but economic exploitation (or corporate exploitation) might be one way to express it.
technology = know how. what did new imperialism learn how to do?
