The witness (and his IMMEDIATE family) are given totally new identities and identity documents and moved to an area of the country where they are unknown. They are also given new houses, jobs and "friends" The witness (and his IMMEDIATE family) are usually moved overnight due to the fact that someong might see them in the day.
