Respiration is one of two processes in the body. We have external respiration which occurs in the lungs and internal respiration that occurs in the tissues of the body. The 'ventilation' or respiration in the lungs is controlled by the medulla oblongatta of the brain stem to changes in demand for oxygen. When we are more active, we require more oxygen to perform aerobic respiration in our slow twitch muscles. We also go into oxygen debt with our fast twitch A & B muscles with activities that are more like short bursts of speed. All this use of energy is produced by the ATP and it requires lots of oxygen to do its job.
