Canals are continually topped up from either ponds or rivers as part of their design to make up for water that is lost through the operation of locks, evapouration and leakage. The canals themselves are usually lined with a waterproof material such as masonry or clay.
By definition, a canal is used to connect two bodies of water. The water in the canal comes from those bodies of water.
Yes and no. The water has to be replenished at the highest point of the canal and the water flows down the canal but only during the operation of the canal's locks.
The U.S Gave the Pannama Canal back, along with 3 milllion dollars, because we felt guilty. We could have been greedy people and kept it. In other words, to have kept it, we could have not given it back -Batman
All canals need to be maintained as they are man-made and subject to deterioration over time. Basically, most canals are little more than level wide trenches whose bottom and sides was lined with puddled clay to prevent water loss. Also, most canals are kept topped up from water kept in reservoirs linked to the canal. As to the Grand Canal, a search on the internet revealed that a lot of countries claim to have a Grand Canal - so a specific country would help. But, at a guess, as boats and small ships increase in size, and carrying capacity increased, so a 'Grand Canal' would need to be deepened and the banks widened.

A canal toe drain is a drainage system located at the base (toe) of a canal to collect and divert excess water away from the canal, preventing waterlogging and erosion of the canal banks. These drains help to manage water levels and protect the structural integrity of the canal.
