Zen Buddhism is practiced primarily taking the backward step--which is meditation called zazen, in order to develop right concentration and right mindfulness and bringing that awareness to every area of your life. Studying impermanence, emptiness, causation (karma), and selflessness, will over time naturally arise through the study of the self through zazen. However, like many other Buddhist traditions, the foundational ideas begin with the Four Noble Truths about suffering, the origin of suffering, and the cessation of suffering taught by the Buddha, and the Eightfold Path that leads to the cessation of suffering.
