Air is the enemy of wine. That half bottle of Mouton Cadet left over after dinner will do best if tightly capped and stored in a cool dark place. No need to refrigerate. Most good wine stores will sell fancy stoppers , some that will even pump the air out of the bottle after re-capping but if you drink wine daily, all you really need is a good clean cork.

A good quality wine will last about a week at temperatures under 60F and out of the light. But think about it, would you really want to leave that "good" bottle of wine alone for that long?

The short answer:

Wine is a delicate living thing.

Theoretically wine will store for quite some time if it's not opened. Wine is bottled air-tight, so as long as there's no exposure to oxygen it won't spoil.

Ways to prevent exposure to oxygen:

Keep the bottle on it's side so that the bottom of the cork inside the bottle remains wet.

For reds, keep in temperatures of 57 - 60 degrees to maintain quality.

Should people use a wine rack or wine refridgerator to store red wine?

For storing red wine, the optimal temperature is 50 to 55 degrees Fahrenheit - not room temperature. So you should store your red wine varieties in a wine cellar or wine refrigerator at that temperature. What is most important is the temperature that the red wine is stored at. Red Wine should be stored at 50-55ºF so it can be stored in a wine rack located in an area kept at this temperature or a wine cellar/cooler or wine refrigerator kept at this temperature.
