It depends on the car, and on the type of driving used to force computer re-learn. The computer has certain "emissions readiness" tests that it must perform before you can pass an emissions test. You can expidite that process by following the manufacturer's re-learn procedure. In the absence of that procedure, simply drive the car at various speeds, at various loads. (High speed does not matter, and it is unsafe and illegal, so don't bother with it.) Some computers leave the Check Engine Light on until re-learn is completed - others, you must check. See the manufacturer's documentation.
