It depends on the breed. If you have a dog that is going to be smaller, such as a Chihuahua, it should nurse for only the first couple months of its life. If you have a dog that is going to grow to be big and strong, such as a Sheepdog, Lab, etc. it will nurse longer then a small dog. Some big dogs can nurse up to a whole year, but that is a very rare case.
If you find your dog is nursing for longer then you think he should, you might have the runt of the litter, or your dog may have a disease or something in the general area. If you do think something like this, take it to the vet. He is the proffesional, and he can tell you what's going on.
They have to be fed every two to three hours, like they're real babies. Remember to pat there backs, to make sure there isn't any air bubbles in there tummies, then when you fed them, clean there rear end, to make then defecate and urinate.
Usually pups will nurse for about four to six weeks, this however depends on the breed, the mother and how many litters she has had. It is poor breeding habbits to rush weening or take a pup from the mother before he/she is ready. Offering soft food to the pups with help things along, but letting nature take its course is the best thing for mom and babies.
